Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather

Small birds are a wonderful choice for someone who enjoys keeping small pets or has a limited amount of space.  In addition to my latest pet rabbits, I have always had pet birds at home as long as I can remember.  Currently, I have a cockatiel named Simon and a parakeet called Blue.  These small birds are easy to care for and they are very smart.

Pet birds will require a cage to call their own space.  Their food requirements are not very complicated.  they eat a diet of birdseed purchased from a pet food or local department store.  It is extremely important to provide fresh water for a bowl kept in their cage.  They also enjoy coming out to enjoy the same foods people eat.  My birds enjoy eating dry cereal like corn flakes and Cheerios.  They also like to peck at toast, rice or spaghetti noodles.

It is important to keep the cage clean.  It is good to have a bottom layer of corncob bedding and then keep paper which is changed daily on top of the corncob bedding this way the poop does not stay in the cage for more than a day.  the birds spend most of their day sitting on a perch, out on someone's shoulder or on one of their feeders.  But occasionally they will get down on the bottom of the cage so it is important to keep their cage as clean as possible to prevent sickness.  At night stye like to have a blanket to cover their cage so that they will feel safe and warm.

Birds are intelligent animals and can learn their name and some cockatiels can even learn to whistle a song or speak a word or short phrase.  If you live in an apartment and do not want to commit to having to walk a pet or you are someone who is allergic to pets with fur you may want to look into getting a pet bird.  they are the perfect pet for someone who lives in the city or even in rural areas.
