Harebrained Adventures Part 2

Harebrained Adventures Part 2

by Jeremy Yarbrough

A few days ago, my rabbits were traumatized by having a neighbor's dog on the loose break into their pen we had constructed out of wood, metal paneling and chicken wire.  And this dog still continues to show up in the backyard each week looking for the rabbits.  Well, my dad and I set out to remedy this situation.  We went to Tractor Supply and purchased a 5 x 10-foot dog kennel.  This weekend we worked on getting it set up so that the rabbits, Floppsie and Petey would be able to run around and get plenty of exercise during the day.

We brought the newly purchased dog kennel home and began work on it Saturday afternoon.  It came packaged in a box so we began by opening the box and pulling out the six separate panels, connector hinges and the door latch.  There were a couple of rubber parts missing on the bottom legs which we had to call customer service about replacing.  The only tools needed to get this job done were a drill and wrench.

First, we tackled installing the door latch attachment onto the panel which would be the entrance into the dog cage.  This was the most difficult part since the door offers the option of opening into the cage or opening to the outside of the cage.  The next step was to connect the six panels which made the 5 x 10 rectangle shape of the kennel.  There were two metal connectors on each of the panels, one on the lower portion and one up a bit higher.  This last portion of the project was the most crucial when dealing with pet rabbits.  This kennel would need a roof on it because we all know how hawks and owls love to prey on rabbits.  We have each of those flying over our yard on a daily basis looking for a tasty snack.  The roof of the rabbit pen was made using five 2 x 4 boards and two pieces of sheet metal.  With the roof in place the rabbit pen was finished.

Once the rabbits were transferred from their night hutch to the newly constructed dog kennel they were thrilled.  They both sniffed, ran, jumped and investigated their new day pen.  It has worked out well.  Floppsie and Petey are safe from wild animals, birds of prey and any stray dogs.  The next project will be building them a new night hutch inside of the newly constructed rabbit pen.  Stay tuned for more harebrained adventures.
