Patriotic Duty

by Jeremy Yarbrough

This year when I turned 18, I registered to vote at the Board of Elections in Lexington.  It was a very simple process to do.  All that has to be done is to fill out a few forms and then you receive the information about where you will vote based on your home address.

This year between the time I registered and this election season, the Board of Elections notified me of a change in the physical location of where I am to vote.  The new polling place has much better parking and facilities to host such an event.  Next year since it is a presidential election year I will probably choose to vote early and the most convenient place to go in Thomasville will be the library which is located in the central part of town.

There has been much discussion on voters presenting some form of identification and I am not sure why this has been such an issue.  First of all, you have to prove where you live in order to register so that you will know what areas you are eligible to vote in.  If you live in the city limits you are allowed to vote for positions such as city mayors and councilpersons.  People living in the country and within city limits should not be voting for those positions.  Residents outside the city limits should only be able to vote for positions like sheriff and county commissioners.  So, presenting an ID card should not be an issue, even if you do not have a driver's license, you can get a photo ID from the Board of Elections of the local DMV.  If you are a student, you can even use your college ID card as a form of identification required to vote.

Voting is a privilege that we have living in America and all citizens should exercise their right to pick who they want to represent them.  Next year will be the first presidential election I will be qualified to vote in and I hope that everyone will turn out and vote.  It is our patriotic duty to let our voices be heard on who we choose to be our leaders.  Do not let anything hold you back, get out and vote!
